Test-drive: Sea Star Beachwear® Espadrilles
Founded in 2015 by friends Libby Fitzgerald and Michael Leva in NYC, Sea Star Beachwear set out with one simple goal—to make amazing, durable water shoes that could also work on dry land (translation: quick drying and good looking enough to wear with a sundress). We asked Melisa Melling—mom and expert traveler (follow her adventures on her blog, Atherley Lane)—to slip them on for a weekend spin around her Brooklyn neighborhood. Here, she and her two kids show us how they wore them—by land and by sea (aka the East River).
HEADING TO BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK “The Sea Star shoes are awesome—they’re supercomfortable from the second I put them on (no breaking in necessary!), and they come in cute patterns.” |
“On the weekends, we try to get out and do something together—if the weather is nice, we go to the playground or the park, which is the kids’ fave.”

SPLASHING IN THE WATER & WATCHING THE CITY SKYLINE
“I love that I don’t have to worry about me or the kids getting them wet, which is perfect for wearing at the beach or during those crazy summer thunderstorms we get in the city.” |
“Declan is a perpetual motion machine and always wants to play. Bella is obsessed with her big brother and generally wants to do what he does. She loves dresses and pink and cries at night when I take out her hair bows!”
A RELAXED STOOP SESSION AT THEIR BROOKLYN HOME “My style could be summed up as comfort-chic. I want to look put together, but whatever I’m wearing needs to function practically in my crazy life. The kids are both superactive, so comfort and function, hopefully mixed with fashion, is key.” |
